그림을 배우지 않아도
화가가 될 수 있을까요?
네, 물론입니다.
여기 40이 넘은 나이로 뒤늦게
그림을 시작하여 꿈을 이룬
화가가 있습니다.
원시적인 화풍으로 알려져 있는
앙리 루소입니다.
그가 그림을 처음으로 시작한
정확한 나이는 불확실하지만
40-41세로 추정하고 있습니다.
세관원이었던 그는 바쁜 시간 외
여유로운 시간에 틈틈이 그림을
그리며 연습하였어요.
그러다 좀 더 그림에
집중하고자 조기 퇴직 후 그림에
전념하게 됩니다.
미술 교육을 받지 않고
자신만의 스타일로 느끼고,
보이는 대로 그렸던 앙리 루소는
화가로 순탄하지 않았습니다.
초기에 자신을 프랑스 최고의
사실주의 화가라고 스스로를 평가하여
주변 화가들의 비웃음 대상이 되어
놀림을 당했습니다.
그러다 말년에 앙리 루소에 대한 주변
평가가 점차 호의적으로 바뀌기 시작하였고
살아생전에 꿈에 그리던 성공을
맛볼 수 있었습니다.
루소의 알려진 작품들 중 정글 풍경 속
야생 동물과 울창한 풀로 가득 찬 작품은
그가 직접 적으로 정글을 경험한 것이
아니라 파리의 정원과 동물원을 방문하였다고
합니다. 왜냐면 태어나 단 한 번도 다른 나라로
여행을 가본적 없었기 때문이죠.
정보가 부족했던 시대에 직접 경험하지
못했지만 멋지게 표현한 그가 대단하게
느껴집니다.
